The number of Mphi in peripheral blood lymphocytes was found to be decreased in ATL patients, and this appears to be one of the characteristics of the malignant state. Also, it is thought that the proliferation of ATL cells is related to the prolonged life span of Mphi observed in the ATL patients. It has been reported that the infiltrated Mphi in ATL lesions are activated cells.
